Find Metiabruz presented by Courtyard Dancers at the first New York Kathak Festival on April 19, 2019 at the Ailey Citigroup Theater in New York City.

Metiabruz in Kolkata, India is the place where the British exiled the last emperor of India, Wajid Ali Shah, a poet, an aesthete, and the most famous patron of Kathak. Wajid Ali moved with his singers and dancers from Lucknow and re-established his court in Metiabruz. In this piece, Metiabruz, now a forgot-ten corner of a forgetful city, is a metaphor for the habitations of poetry. This abstract piece weaves the words of Arab poet Taha Muhammad Ali with Kathak moves, as an ode to the city and its rich history of North Indian courtesans and their dance.

Choreography by Pallabi Chakravorty.
